CONCLUSION

My experience working on the blog and researching the various sources to compile my list of the top 100 children’s books was intriguing. There are numerous books written about a race which are not about a specific culture but are well written and serves its purposes for the very young reader, but there are also books which are written to be culturally specific [black children’s literature written by black authors] to educate the young reader about social justice and racism. Culturally specific books also educate young children about the achievements of a group of people, their culture and that they can aspire to be whatever they choose. Biographies were varied, some were written about slaves such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth who made a difference by acting or speaking out about the horrors of slavery; other biographies were written about various people who were successful in music, art, athletics, law, science, inventions and the highest achievement as president of the United States.

Children should be introduced to these topics based on their developmental stage, age, and their ability to process the information adequately. The books selected also educated the children on issues relating to school readiness such as concept books.

Black children are more likely to read, if they see their images on the front book covers and within the pages of each book. They will increase their vocabulary, comprehension and their love of reading.
