INTRODUCTION

The focus of my Top 100 Children’s Books Blog is black children’s reflections on the front and back covers including the content written in each fiction or non-fiction book highlighted. In the narrative of this blog I will discuss the criteria used in selecting the top 100 children’s books, why they were selected and trends in children’s literature

I will discuss the children’s book publishing industry’s refusal to increase the number of children’s books written by black authors. Another controversial topic will also be discussed, “Should white authors be writing our stories?”. The literacy rate is affected by the quality of the children’s literature available to black children.

This blog also assists parents, caretakers, librarians, teachers and others who work with children of the diversity of books available about the black experience, little known works which have not been promoted, etc. This blog lists the age appropriateness and grade level recommended for each book including the images of each book cover. Each book included would attract a black child’s interest and be read, not discarded. The parents would also be attracted to the books listed and read them to their young ones. The books were compiled for ages from birth through eight years old although some ages and grades may over-lap. This information is listed under each book cover image. The fiction/non-fiction books written by black authors and white authors are listed separately, so their styles can be compared.

Hopefully, my search of quality books for black children will be received in earnest.
